Craving a tower defense game, just unable to find one that’s worth playing? Well look no more, I found one. It’s the new Toy Soldiers: War Chest Hall of Fame Edition, just released on August 11th, 2015, and the game is surprisingly pretty fun.
I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into this one, as it’s not like most other games you will play. First introduced to tower defense games back in 2003 while playing custom games on Warcraft III RoC (Reign of Chaos), ever since I’ve fallen in love with them. Lately I have actually been searching for a good one to play and recently tried the indie game Defending Humanity and it’s your pretty basic Tower Defense game. But Ubisoft is taking Tower Defense to a new level with their Toy Soldiers game and I wasn’t really prepared for it.
The game has several really nice features to it along with your traditional tower defense mechanisms. You can upgrade your towers three different ways, damage, range, and hit points. The gold it requires for each one is pretty evenly balanced, you don’t find yourself starving for gold to where you think the game is impossible to win and it’s not too easy as to where you can just not know what you are doing and make it by. You also have the ability to use a third person mode as well, this too feels good while running around the map, doesn’t feel unnatural and the controls are nice.
Furthermore you get other special characters to playbvwhile going through your waves. During one series of waves I was a flying unicorn shooting rainbows at the enemy’s while dashing through the sky, the other a fire owl trying to dominate scorpions roaming across the map.
Now the story (if there really is one) is not very good at all, but to be honest I wasn’t playing the game for that. Between each level it might go through a short little screenplay setting you up for the next series of waves, but honestly it wasn’t worth following. Don’t expect the game to be as emotionally involved as something like The Last Of Us, it’s focused on building towers and defending your Toy Box.
If you’re interested in trying this game feel free to check it out for the PC it’s only $29.99 and if you are a fan of Tower Defense, you should enjoy this game.
